Big East honors local players

The Big East Basketball Conference recently announced its post-season award winners and statistical leaders for the 2014-15 season.
Those players were recognized Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 at the Big East senior all-star games played at Old Town High School.
Presque Isle Wildcat senior guard Hannah Graham and senior forward Krystal Kingsbury of Presque Isle were named to the first team, joining Player of the Year Sierra Tapley of Mount Desert Island and Kelsey Shaw and Sarah Phelps, both of the Trojans.

Fort Fairfield claims hoop title

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Northern Maine Community Recreation Association held its Aroostook County Youth Girls Basketball Tournament for grades 4-6 Saturday at the Fort Fairfield Community Center.
The host Fort Fairfield squad won the seven-team tourney, defeating Washburn in the championship game by a score of 21-18.

Stone and Streinz lead field at Towle ski frolic

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine —  The 14th annual Himie Towle Memorial Winter Frolic was held March 7 at the Nordic Heritage Center, with Paul Stone taking first in the 10-kilometer race for men and Lydia Streinz leading the women’s field.

County Challenge Series has rich history

The Aroostook Mûsterds Running Club’s County Challenge Series has started its 33rd season with the Katahdin Trust Sow Run held in Houlton Feb. 7, 2015.
For 2015, the series again consists of seven races. Races this year include the Snow Run, the UMPI Spring Runoff 5K (in Presque Isle April 11), the S.W. Collins 5K (in Caribou June 21), the Mûsterd Mile (in Caribou July 10), the Potato Blossom 5-Miler (in Fort Fairfield July 18), the newly-added Maine Running Festival Half-Marathon (in Presque Isle Aug. 30), and the Caribou Labor Day Road Race (in Caribou Sept. 7).

Three Caribou pageants take place on March 21

Caribou student makes Dean’s List

The University of Southern Maine recently announced the fall 2014 semester Dean’s List. Among the students achieving the honor was Ashley Christine Ouellette of Caribou. In order to be named to the list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours.
