Percherons

By Arianna Easter
Grade 4, New Sweden
I’m writing about Percherons because they are a breed of horse. Percherons are special to me because my aunt owns one.
A Percheron is a breed of draft horse that was found in the Huisne River area in western France. They are famous for their strong muscles and their bigness.
Percherons are still being used today. They are mainly used for hauling things, pulling carriages, and working. They also have a really good temperament, and they are really calm. They also do dressage.

Greek Goddesses

By Maya Peterson
Grade 4, New Sweden
A goddess is a female divine being. They are a very important part of Greek mythology. In books I’ve read, for example, the Percy Jackson series, they sound really amazing. That is why I’ve decided to do this article about them.
I like Greek goddesses because I’ve been reading about them for awhile. Every goddess is the goddess of something. Like Hestia is the goddess of the hearth. Hera is the queen of goddesses.
My favorite goddess is Amphitrite. She was the goddess queen of the sea. She was married to King Poseidon. He’s the ruler of the sea. There are a lot of lost or broken statues of her in the ocean.
Most goddesses have a Roman aspect.  For example, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, is known  as Venus in Rome. Most gods’ or goddess’ names are planets.
Some goddesses have symbols. Hera has a peacock. Athena has an owl and a olive tree. Athena’s sacred place is Athens. She has a statue in Athens called Athena Parthenos. I really love the story of the Athens.

Red Panda

By Kammie Fisher
Grade 4, New Sweden
I am writing about red pandas because they are so cute. They are a mammal. They absolutely love to lay in trees and eat apples. I watched them on a YouTube video. Some can live up to 8 years, which is long for animals.
They have a huge tail. It’s fluffy and soft. Their length is 20 to 26 inches. The weight for a panda is 12 to 20 pounds. Most of the pandas give birth in the spring. Some of them don’t give birth in the spring. They stay with their mother in their nests for ninety days.

Expanding Your Horizons

By Riley McNeal
& Olivia Austin
Grade 8, Caribou Middle School
On Thursday, March 12, selected students from Caribou Middle School had a chance to attend the Expanding Your Horizons Conference for girls at the University of Maine. The conference is designed to help girl’s become more interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. The career fields are still mainly male-dominated and that is what they are hoping to change by exposing girls to these career fields.
To kick off the day, two speakers came and presented slideshows, and told about their careers in science. The first of two speakers was a marine biologist. She is currently trying to find out why nearly half of the female salmon eggs die before fertilization. The second speaker was a scientist’s communicator. She is in charge of sharing with the public, what the scientists can’t. She translates the difficult scientific jargon into simple, more common terms.

Girls’ Day at the State House

By Madison Jandreau
Caribou Middle School
My experience at the State House on March 5, 2015 was a great privilege. Having the honor to be chosen for this day in Augusta was so amazing for me because it introduced me to many new things in the world of politics. Being able to listen to speakers and representatives of our State was a life changing event. I have a new perspective the different jobs in the political field and how important it is that there are amazing women working for our State. As much as this day was about teaching girls about political controversies, the women there were  trying to increase each girl’s confidence and to tell us that we can do great things for our community, state, or even country.
The bill that we focused on all day was “To Create a State-run Virtual Academy Providing Maine Students with Access to Online Learning through Their Existing School District.”
