Proper tree care could avoid property damage

Hazardous trees pose a danger to people and property. When storms or high winds hit, limbs — and often whole trees — fall to the ground.
“Many fatal accidents and millions of dollars in property damage can be averted if homeowners heed the warning signs of a hazardous tree,” explains Tchukki Andersen, BCMA, CTSP and staff arborist for the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). “By not paying attention to your trees, you are potentially placing your property, even your life, in jeopardy.”

State Constitution can be amended

To the editor:
I read with interest Dr. Winslow’s letter to the editor of April 22 claiming that Maine citizens are going to lose their rights if LD 754 or LD 1084, legislations to amend our State Constitution, are passed. It appears that she did not research to see just what the rules for amending our State Constitution are. Perhaps she should have. If she had, she might not have taken such a radical call to arms stance on the subject! She especially should have read Section 4 of Article X.

Aroostook Skies: ‘Live long and prosper’

The recent passing of Leonard Nimoy cannot stay overlooked by our community. His performance over the years as “Mr. Spock” well earns the matchless praise for the creation of an original American television personality.

Poppy Program vital to veterans

To the editor:
Memorial Day is quickly approaching, a time to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars. Enjoy the holiday, but don’t forget those who made it possible. Participate in the parade, whether it is by marching or watching along the parade route. Please honor and remember the servicemen and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. No, freedom isn’t free.

The case for modernizing personal care product rules

By U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins
(R-Maine)

Personal care products include an extensive range of goods from shampoo to lotion, make-up to antiperspirants, which are widely used by American consumers of all ages every day. Under current law, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has surprisingly very little authority to act and protect consumer safety when it comes to personal care products. In fact, the FDA does not even have mandatory recall authority for products that may cause serious harm.  The federal law that ensures the ingredients in these products are safe has not been updated in more than 75 years.
