Flags wave for veterans

CARIBOU, Maine — In honor of fallen soldiers, family members raised 30 flags at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery on Monday.
Flags waved in the wind as families patiently waited to raise them in the memory of loved ones. The Loring Honor Guard presented our nation’s colors just before the Caribou High School choir sang the national anthem.

School board hears from architects, approves budget

CARIBOU, Maine — RSU 39’s Capital Improvement Project came under fire from resident Bruce Hagelstein during the school board’s May 6, 2015 meeting.
“I think we’re at a point where everyone’s drinking the Kool-aid,” Hagelstein said as he questioned the current state of the project. “Everyone would love a new school, but this is Caribou, Maine.” He wanted to know what other projects PDT (the architects behind the Capital Improvement Project) have done in the past and whether or not the project will raise taxes, “Is the state picking up the whole tab?” He then asked what would happen to Teague Park Elementary, Hilltop Elementary, and the Caribou Middle School if the RSU decides to consolidate, “What happens to the three old buildings? Will they become three white elephants?”

Mom’s simple words of wisdom

My mother Loena Sutherland had a huge barrel cactus. It was picky and highly objectionable to keep. Then it blossomed into a beautiful white trumpet blossom that filled the room with its scent for a day. “Being patient is a virtue” is a quote I remember of Mom’s. My daughter gave me a card for […]

1915: Police chief to inspect Caribou backyards for cleanliness

115 Years Ago-1900

• May baskets are now the rage. The young folks very thoughtfully remembered several children who have been on the sick list for some time with well-filled baskets on Tuesday night.
• We think we can say without fear of contradiction that Caribou has a greater number of stylish turnouts than any other town in Northern Maine. Besides the many private rigs, the livery stables vie with each other to see which can turn out the most stylish team.

The year without summer

While the warmer weather of the past few days are a sign that summer is indeed coming, there once was a summer when it never did.

You see, next summer (2016) is the 200th anniversary of one of the most unusual climate anomalies in modern recorded history.

New mining rules would overridethe will of the people

To the editor:
On Monday, May 11, the legislative Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) will hold yet another public hearing on a bill about open-pit mining rules. This will be the third time in the last year or so that I have traveled to Augusta to testify in opposition to such rules, and I am once again struck with the ironies of this process. The Board of Environmental Protection (BEP) and the ENR committee are charged with protecting our environment and natural resources. Instead of rules that would strengthen protection of the environment, they are, once again, writing and attempting to pass rules that would weaken current protections.
