•Road Commissioner A.J. McDougal has certainly done a most praiseworthy job on Sweden Street, making the road one of the best highways to be found. A portion of the expense on this piece of road was borne by private subscriptions.

Midsommar marks 145th anniversary of Swedish Colony in Maine

FFHS graduates awarded scholarships

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — During recent commencement exercises, members of Fort Farifield’s Class of 2015 received a total of $135,000 in scholarships, $61,000 from the local community and $74,000 from county and state sources.

Doak, St. Peter tabbed as outstanding senior athletes at Caribou High School

CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou High School sports participants were honored on June 8 for their efforts on the baseball and softball diamond, tennis courts and track this spring.
End-of-the-year awards were also handed out and Sarah Doak was named Outstanding Senior Female Athlete, while Mitchell St. Peter won the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete award. Doak participated in soccer, Nordic skiing and track and field, while St. Peter ran cross country, skied and participated in track and field.

Eagles drop EM final to Stearns

    BREWER, Maine — It didn’t take long for the Stearns High School softball team to find itself trailing 2-0 in its first Eastern Maine championship game appearance since 1988.
Defending Eastern Maine Class D champion Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics, making its third appearance in the regional title game in the last four years, scored a pair of first-inning runs, but the resilient Lady Minutemen scored seven of the next eight runs and captured their first-ever regional championship 12-7 last Tuesday at Coffin Field.

Secluded waterways offer sportsmen’s paradise

Outdoorsmen in general tend to develop a habit of hunting certain areas and fishing specific waterways. What with the fairly rigid time constraints of work and family life, most of these cast and blast haunts tend to be fairly close to home. With so many Aroostook sportsmen using this quick outing to a nearby location theory, pressure on the urban edges and rural outskirt fishing destinations endure fairly heavy attention.

County girls’ team completes successful tourney season

What began as an idea to try to extend the basketball season for a couple fourth-graders from Houlton ended up with a team consisting of players from throughout central and southern Aroostook County competing in a national tournament last month.
The Maine Athletic Club squad, consisting of three girls from Caribou (Ashlyn Bouchard, Anna Jandreau and Salena Savage), two from Southern Aroostook (Madison Russell and Madison Shields), two from Houlton (Drew Warman and Emma Swallow) and one from Presque Isle (Faith Sjoberg), returned from the Zero Gravity National Tournament held in Massachusetts June 6-7 by placing in a tie for third place in the 10-and-under division with a 3-2 record.

Worcester, Overman take talents to Husson

    There will be an increased Aroostook County influence on the Husson University women’s basketball team next season.
Coach Kissy Walker confirmed that Husson has received commitments from two more high school standouts as Washburn High School classmates Mackenzie Worcester and Joan Overman will attend the Bangor school in the fall.

Twenty-two more Gauvin Scholars join ranks

Aroostook Aspirations Initiative just completed an exciting few weeks. In late May and early June the two-year-old organization awarded 22 students the prestigious Gauvin Scholar title.
The Aroostook students chosen as Gauvin Scholars are often first generation college students, who display excellence in character and decision-making, have a commitment to their community and a commitment to life in Aroostook County. Executive Director April Flagg said the growth of the program was an unexpected joy and credits AAI’s business partners.
