The end of breast cancer

    In May of 2012, I attended the first of my annual Advocate Leadership Summits for the National Breast Cancer Coalition in Washington, D.C. Every year, as I attend the Summit, I am reminded of the tireless work of advocates around the globe … advocates just like my friend, Sarah Merchant, who I had the honor of meeting at that very first Summit event.

Caribou’s present past and future: Part II

Editor’s note: This is the second part of an essay on Caribou throughout the years by a life-long resident.
Barber shops and beauty shops kept us clipped, cut and curled in neat styles. About the only time we saw a man with a beard was on Santa Claus at Christmas.

Community Partner Award

    Catholic Charities Maine recently presented the Community Partner Award to Thompson-Hamel, LLC, of Presque Isle in recognition of their outstanding commitment to community service. The company held its inaugural Irish Fest in March, with proceeds benefiting CCM’s Farm for ME.

Acadian Archives feature Presque Isle photographer

FORT KENT, Maine — “Paul Cyr Photography,” an exhibition of prize-winning photographic works by Presque Isle resident Paul Cyr, will be on display at the University of Maine at Fort Kent’s Acadian Archives through Sept. 30.
A Hamlin native, Cyr started taking pictures in the early 1960s and his photography has become a lifetime hobby. He spends time every day looking for new photographic opportunities. He takes 99 percent of his photographs in northern Maine, most within 10 miles of his Presque Isle home.

Employees honored during annual event

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle honored several employees for their years of service during the annual Employee Recognition Reception held on May 21. Twenty-three employees were recognized for their combined 315 years of service to the university. Employees were honored with various tokens of appreciation, from clocks to framed art.
