Aroostook Skies: The path to Pluto

Like you, I saw the first images from New Horizons with the same sense of fascination and curiosity as earlier publicized links between humanity and the cosmos. I mean, we continued to wait since August, 1989 to see the chain of discovery fulfilled in our solar system. When Voyager 2 left Earth in 1977, the original mission did not include Pluto on the spacecraft itinerary. Voyager’s planetary parade ended with Neptune.

Maintaining Lyndon roads

To the editor:

There is a constant barrage of statements coming from the Caribou City Council claiming that the Secession Committee is making false claims that Lyndon will not be able to manage and maintain it roads on the monies — $650,000 — we say are adequate.

The anti-rural bias explained

To the editor:

Recently, the citizens of Caribou were treated to a public response from the Chairman of the Planning Board for the city of Caribou, to the report written by the Caribou Secession Committee Representatives. Their response was authored by Mr. Phil Cyr, in a Letter to the Editor, published in two parts in the Viewpoint Section of the Aroostook Republican.

• The Canadian Pacific Railroad Co. is running weekly excursions during the summer months to New Brunswick’s Fundy Coast. The rates from Caribou to St. Stephen and return are $4.65 and to St. Andrews are $4.90.

Local towns to receive community block grants

The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) has announced that 13 municipalities from Fort Kent to Brunswick have been awarded funding under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program administered by the Office of Community Development within DECD.
