Panel hopes to boost business development in unorganized areas

 

CARIBOU, Maine — The Aroostook County Community Guided Planning and Zoning Steering Committee met last Wednesday night to hear input from the public on their plan to create a new development subdistrict in the unorganized and deorganized areas of Aroostook County.

Noise complaints burden Caribou Police Department

The barking of a dog, the laughter of children playing in the yard, and the sound of an early morning lawn mower are just a few elements that create the soundtrack of a suburban neighborhood. When the Caribou police department receives a complaint, even something as trivial as a noise complaint, they make an effort to respond, but this puts a strain on the city’s resources.

Maine author and artist plans talk, book signing

The Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project (SACAP), 66 Main Street in Houlton, will host an art talk and book signing at 7 p.m., Friday, July 17, by Belfast artist David Estey for his new humorous, illustrated memoir “Whoop and Drive ’er! – Growing Up in Aroostook County, Maine.”

University of Maine at Fort Kent holds 133rd commencement

The University of Maine at Fort Kent graduating seniors received their degrees at the 133rd commencement exercises held at UMFK on May 9. University President Wilson G. Hess presided over the ceremony that conferred 163 bachelor degrees and 43 associate degrees.

Retired educators set summer meetings

The summer meetings of the Aroostook Retired Educators Association (AREA). Registration will continue on Tuesday, July 21 at Nadeau Hall, University of Maine at Fort Kent. The program will be Senior College.

Ouellette is recipient of FEEA scholarship

Brandon Ouellette of Van Buren is the recipient of an LTC Partner’s/FEEA scholarship.

Brandon is the son of Lee and Lori Ouellette and is a student at Bowdoin College. His father is his sponsor with Department of Homeland Security. Students are generally sponsored by their parents who are federal employees.

The Aroostook Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Aroostook Agency on Aging recently held their 40th annual volunteer recognition luncheon at the State Road Advent Christian Church in Mapleton.
