Life Lesson 36: Cancer screening may save your life

The night was short; in complete sync with the lingering daylight of a June evening in Maine. The windows and screen doors were open; ushering in the scent of lilac, wild roses, ancient perennials and recently cut grass. We sat at the oblong veneer table, our hands expressing much more than our words as we sealed our bonds of comradery yet again.

Thanks to Ride Aroostook volunteers

To the editor:

I just could not let this week go by without paying tribute to the many, many volunteers who helped out with Ride Aroostook over the weekend of July 11-12. There were young people, seniors, high school students, families, so many volunteers I would not attempt to name them all and I would not want to miss a single one.

Response from Secession Committee: Part II

Editor’s note: The first part of Paul Camping’s letter to the editor ran in last week’s edition.

To the editor:

Now, a little history. For reasons, that escape me, Mr. Cyr describes himself as a fiscal conservative, just like the members of the Secession Committee. I’m not quite sure of his motives here, but I for one, can tell you his feeling of comradery is not shared by the Committee. To fully understand why, I have to describe for you the events that transpired at the City Council meeting on the evening of January 14, 2013. City Council was to consider allowing City Manager Bleess to sign a contract with an aviation consulting firm that would handle the repaving contract for the runways at the Caribou Municipal Airport.

What meeting were you at?

I read last week’s paper while I was away on holidays and thought I must have attended the wrong meeting on July 7th. When you get older you sometimes get more forgetful, so I diligently watched the workshop with the secession group which I found on the city’s website to see if I had talked about Van Buren and their Public Works Dept. and their cost to maintain roads. I was certainly hoping I hadn’t, because I have never taken the time to investigate Van Buren’s Public Works Dept.

Looking Back: Week of July 22

115 Years Ago – 1900

• The travelling library, which was loaned by the state to the town of Caribou, has returned, more than likely due to the popularity of the author’s works.

• The Bangor and Aroostook railroad will run a cheap excursion to Millinocket, the “Magic City of the East.” The cost of a round trip is $1.50.
