Moving more Mainers back to work

     Maine is home to the best loggers and truckers in the Country. Unfortunately, the logging and trucking workforce is declining due to obsolete regulations that are prohibiting our young Mainers from choosing this career path.

Proposed National Park land

To the editor:

     Have you been to the proposed national park land yet? What a beautiful area with a rich history. We had some friends, from Pennsylvania, visit this summer and we took them camping and kayaking around Aroostook and to the proposed park land.

Addiction is real and it is powerful

I am writing today in regards to the substance abuse problem that plagues our community, with the hopes that our community will come together and combat this problem. Certain citizens of Houlton and the surrounding areas have fallen victim to the disease of addiction.

Caribou needs Zero Based Budgeting

     To the editor:

     Zero Based Budgeting is a methodical and thoughtful approach used in determining how much money an organization needs to set aside to function. It requires managers and administrators to examine and justify every line item in their budget. Municipalities throughout the United States are using this accounting tool because it is considered to be more taxpayer-friendly.

1940: Junior Exhibition shows young talent

115 Years Ago – 1900

    Long haul — One day recently, Frank Hammond, with one pair of horses, hauled 27,000 shingles at one load from Barton’s mills in Perham to the B. and A. depot in Caribou, a distance of ten miles.  During a month of 26 working days, Mr. Hammond hauled 53,721 feet of long lumber over the same route.

Friday, Sept. 18 CARIBOU: The Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery will hold a ceremony honoring POW/MIA at 1 p.m. Guest speakers, musical selections and program will be featured, and there will be laying of the memorial wreath. All are welcome.

Forestry cluster learns about UMO research

     CARIBOU — Meeting for the fifth time Wednesday, Aug. 26, as a full group, the Northern Forestry Products Industry Cluster, organized by Aroostook Partnership for Progress (APP), took a deep dive into research and development thanks to a presentation from scientists at The University of Maine in Orono.

Dufour earns credentials

     CARIBOU — Cindy Dufour, certified kitchen designer and manager of the S.W. Collins Co. Design Center since 2004, has achieved  designation as a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) through the National Association of Home Builders. Flagg to spearhead ACAP project

     PRESQUE ISLE — The Aroostook County Action Program, Inc., has announced that April Flagg has been appointed project director for the Regional Alternative to Secure Confinement project. April Flagg
