Businesses receive development funds

     AUGUSTA — Commissioner Walt Whitcomb recently announced eight Agricultural Development Grant Program awards totaling nearly $250,000 at the Maine Agricultural Trades Show, including two Aroostook County businesses.

115 Years Ago — Jan. 23, 1901

Grippe epidemic — That one Caribou physician has already attended more than 60 cases of grippe, or the flu, in Caribou.

100 Years Ago — Jan. 27, 1916

Early summer plans — It has been already announced that Fort Fairfield will celebrate July 4 this year. Caribou had the celebration in 1914 and Presque Isle in 1915. Plans are already underway in our sister town for the biggest celebration ever known there.

NMCC names dean’s list

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Northern Maine Community College has released its dean’s list for the 2015 fall semester. A total of 159 full-time students achieved a 3.20 average or better; 39 of these students were named to high honors with a grade point average of 3.85 or better. Twenty-two students had the distinction of earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Don’t let Fairpoint leave you speechless

To The Editor:

     AARP Maine believes no matter where you live in Maine, you have a right to a reliable, affordable landline phone. Fairpoint Communications, the company required by state law to provide this vital service, is trying to wriggle out of this obligation. Don’t let them abandon rural Mainers, many of whom are elderly, poor or disabled.

     One of the most crucial elements for ensuring that students are able to succeed in life and achieve their dreams is a quality education. The ability of students to excel academically is influenced by caring teachers, involved parents, and modern educational resources, and our students’ ability to learn is also affected by whether or not they have the proper nutrition.
