Local girl captures state foul shooting title

     BANGOR, Maine — At the Elks’ State Hoop Shoot foul shooting competition held at the Bangor High School Jan. 31, 2016, Faith Sjoberg of Presque Isle captured the Alan W. Richard Award, which went to the champion female Hoop Shoot contestant in Maine.

     In winning her division for 10- and 11-year-old girls, Sjoberg sank 22 of 25 foul shots attempted, which was the top score for all girls in the state competition. That score also happened to equal the top score for all the boys in the event.

Soap Box Derby deadline is fast approaching

     HOULTON, Maine — The Northern Maine Soap Derby Committee invites all youth between the ages of 8 to 18 years to participate in this year’s Soap Box Derby Race in Houlton. It’s not too early to register.

ASA softball umpires sought

     The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) runs competitions in every state through a network of 76 state and metro associations. It has a membership of over 230,000 teams, with more than three million players and 35,000 umpires. Every spring all across Maine, ASA conducts clinics and provides other important training opportunities to individuals who can respond affirmatively to the following questions.

     In my last article, I recounted two frustrating and discouraging outings during the last week of bear baiting last September. The high tech red dot sight topping my Magnum Research BFR .45-70 revolver just wasn’t up to the task of centering a deadly shot on a black bear’s dark body silhouetted against a brushy backdrop during the gloomy dusk just minutes before legal shooting time ended. I couldn’t allow myself to, and didn’t, pull the trigger because I wasn’t positive of a lung hit.

     AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Warden Service is reminding anglers, snowmobilers and others who like to recreate on Maine’s lakes and ponds in the winter that ice conditions on many waterways throughout the state right now may not be safe to hold themselves or heavy equipment and vehicles.

Limestone man accused of driving drunk

     CARIBOU, Maine -— A Limestone man was arrested last Monday after a Caribou police officer said he saw the driver speeding in the wrong direction in a roundabout intersection in the city.
