New troopers earn badges in Vassalboro

VASSALBORO, Maine — Maine’s 14 newest troopers received their badges in ceremonies Friday at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.

The new troopers completed 10 weeks of specialized State Police training and will now patrol with a veteran trooper before patrolling on their own.

Troopers Matthew Curtin and Patrick Pescitelli have been assigned to Troop F in Aroostook County.

100 Years Ago — April 13, 1916

Grange meets despite weather — Aroostook County Famous Grange met with Westfield Grange Saturday, April 8, with a good attendance considering the bad roads. About 125 came together in the morning with considerably more in the afternoon.

Of great interest — It is a matter of much interest to find out how the Presque Isle-to-Caribou gravel road, built last year by the state, is going to stand up under the conditions which weather and the wear and tear of traffic will subject it to. If it does, it will be of an example for other roads in the town.

3-D crafter to host Caribou workshop

CARIBOU, Maine — Three-dimensional artist and author Eileen Hull of Virginia will present a craft workshop Tuesday, May 3, 2016, in Caribou from 1-4 p.m.

Hull, who owns Eileen Hull Designs, is the author of “Matboard Magic” and “Foamboard Magic,” and has launched a line of die-cutting tools and supplies.

Federal funds will help save numerous patients’ lives

To the editor:

This year in Maine, an estimated 9,270 people will be diagnosed with cancer and another 3,320 will die of the disease. People without health coverage are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at its later stages, when patients are less likely to survive and treatments are more costly.

The legislative session here in Augusta is winding down and we find ourselves in the unfamiliar position of actually having a forecasted surplus of state revenue. Now the question around the Maine State House is what do we do with these unexpected funds?

Boys and Girls Club family nights promise friendly fun, information

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Medical Center is supporting the Boys and Girls Club of Presque Isle by sponsoring some evenings combining fun and important information. These healthy family engagement nights are designed to raise awareness for several societal issues.

The first of these events was held April 12, and similar evenings are planned on Thursday, June 16, and Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 from 4-6 p.m., both at the new Micmac Community Wellness building.
