Huskies Football and SAD 1 announce effort

New flag football program starting for youth in central Aroostook

Aroostook Huskies Football and SAD 1 have announced that they’ve partnered to start a flag football program for youth in grades 1-6 in central Aroostook County.

The new program kicks off with a series of meetings to introduce the program and identify parent leaders. While SAD 1 seeks to determine if there is sufficient interest in football to consider a high school football team, Aroostook Huskies is looking to build on its current program.

Owl softball team wins 4 of 6 to remain in third in coaches poll

The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team’s strong season continued and the Owls stand tied for third in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association coaches poll.

The squad, coached by Sara Shaw, carries a 17-9 record into its doubleheader Saturday against Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vt. The team has another twinbill Sunday at UM-Farmington before taking on Thomas College for two more games in Waterville Tuesday.

Recognition honors hospitals deemed best places to have a baby

CARIBOU, Maine — Cary Medical Center has received the 2016 Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics.

This evidence-based designation is the only award that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence, and what women say they want from a hospital. The Caribou hospital also received the award in 2013 and 2015.

 The list of over 400 award winners, including Cary Medical Center, represents hospitals that offer exceptional obstetric services which ranked above the national average for patient safety, thereby supporting a woman’s decision when choosing the best for her maternity needs.

Community garden a place for renewal and healing

Fort Fairfield garden plots will be rented out starting next year

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Community and wellness are two key concepts organizers have built into the Community General Hospital Legacy Project, and Fort Fairfield residents will begin to benefit from their work this summer.

Early in 2015, the CGH Legacy Project Committee announced plans for a series of community projects, including a memorial garden and a community garden. The committee is a partnership between the Town of Fort Fairfield, the Fort Fairfield Quality of Place Council and the Community General Hospital Legacy Committee. Its overarching mission is to pay tribute to the legacy of the former Community General Hospital, including its staff, volunteers, donors and patients through the years.
