115 Years Ago — May 22, 1901

     Rain is needed — Rain is very much needed. It is reported that many forest fires are raging. Tuesday and Wednesday were very hot days, being 89 and 92 degrees in the shade respectively. Also, on the account of so many blossoms, some of the knowing ones predict a large crop of berries this season.

     Successful trip — Dr. I.W.E. McLellan, H.E. Trainor and W.R. Lumbert, Esq., made a successful fishing trip to Bridgwater Saturday, returning home Sunday. They brought home 60 trout.

UMPI confers degrees at 107th commencement

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — One hundred and fifty-four students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, May 14, 2016, during the 2016 Commencement Exercises — the University’s 107th commencement ceremony. President Linda Schott conferred degrees for the 2015-2016 academic year upon the 85 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.

So, can you say ‘Sis Boom Bah?’

To the editor:

     After reading the City of Caribou’s puffy press-release piece in the May, 11, 2016 edition of the Aroostook Republican (Caribou Region Business section), which was entitled: “Caribou gets kudos in national surveys”, I had to muster all of my will power in order to resist the overwhelming urge to jump on my bicycle and pedal down to the local fireworks emporium in order to purchase a battery of spiffy new skyrockets, preferably ones that would display the Caribou City Seal when they exploded (ka-boom!).

Caribou, to be or not to be

To the editor:

     It’s time for the residents of Caribou to decide if their city is worth fighting for or simply let its businesses close, its museums shutter their doors, and the secessionists tear apart anything that remains.
