What’s going on at cemetery?

To the editor:

     We are concerned about the reports of the Evergreen Cemetery falling into disrepair. We have many relatives and they date back many years and wars.They are buried there. Our parents and sister share a family lot there.

Grateful for leaders who fight fraud

To the Editor:

     AARP Maine hosted a “Scam Jam” in Bangor on June 1st and we were pleased to welcome over 200 participants to the event. Scams and frauds in Maine are unfortunately on the rise and we hope through events like these to raise awareness and help Maine residents become great fraud fighters.

Place names change with time

     In recent years our house numbers changed due to the Emergency 9-1-1 system and this allowed us to move without packing a dish.  The move without packing also sometimes happened to our ancestors.

DEP founding father sees progress in waters

Agency hones in on Aroostook, Prestile waterways

     Matt Scott, an 81-year-old retired water biologist, recently put 135 acres of land he owned in Belgrade into a conservation easement. 

“I figure that’s the best thing I can do. I can’t take it with me,” said Scott, speaking at the University of Maine Presque Isle in April. The former chief biologist for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection shared “experimental” presentation on his experience as part of America’s first generation of environmental regulators.

Mitzpah sanctuary offers cancer-related talks in Grand Isle

     GRAND ISLE, Maine — For those suffering from cancer, it can be an extraordinarily isolating experience. There is a place where survivors, their friends and families, or anyone suffering from grief can come to reflect, meditate, and be at peace with nature. That place is called “Mizpah,” and this year the sanctuary is adding a series of presentations involving local medical professionals from area hospitals.

Hospitals’ food drive a success

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A region-wide effort in May by The County’s four hospitals to replenish area food pantries has resulted in just over 3,000 pounds of food to help “Feed The County.”
