America’s Insurance Policy

To the editor:

     The gun debate: why have guns at all? Like the misconception over separation of church and state, much misunderstanding has evolved since our federal Constitution was written, usually at the hands of those who believe in centralization of governmental power. Our Constitution is based upon cherished concepts gleaned from historical experience, lessons learned from what has worked, and what to avoid that would destroy freedom. This remains relevant even today as back then.

Schoolhouses part of our local history

To the editor:

     I recently visited the Caribou Historical Society in order to donate a article which had belonged to my first husband, Arnold O. Beaulieu, (1932-78) of Caribou. I was totally overwhelmed by the beautiful buildings, sparkling cleanliness, orderly and interesting displays, and the friendliness and interest of the two gentlemen “minding the store.”

Support Alzheimer’s research

     To the editor:

     June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in Maine and nearly one out of three seniors who die each year has Alzheimer’s or another dementia. At this point in time there is no cure or effective treatment and is the most costly compared to the other leading causes of death in the United States.

Twilight’s last gleaming

     This is such a great time of the year if you enjoy being outdoors after work, since you’ve still got tons of daylight after a 5 p.m. quittin’ time. In Caribou, the latest sunset is at 8:31 p.m. So if you go home, get changed, you have a good three hours of daylight before sundown.

Treasured recipes made even better

     Among the items my husband inherited from his mother is a well-used black notebook. In it are pages of handwritten recipes, clippings, and even a tiny menu from a restaurant in Shanghai, China prior to the start of World War II. All of these were gathered between 1939-1950 as the family followed Jack’s career Navy father to various postings.

NMCC receives lab grant

Funds will help install auto paint booth

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Northern Maine Community College has received an $85,000 grant from the Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges for equipment and an upgrade to its Automotive Collision Repair Lab. The money will be used for the installation of a paint booth.

FF streaming town meetings

     FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Fort Fairfield has contracted with Town Hall Streams to provide streaming and playback access to town council meetings.
