Explosive second half powers Machias boys past Easton in D North semi

BANGOR, MAINE — For about 17 minutes on Thursday afternoon, the Machias boys basketball team’s attack was mired in neutral thanks to a gritty Easton club.

But the inevitable Bulldogs shift was coming, and coach Jim Getchell’s squad hit overdrive in a big way in the third quarter thanks to the play of Jordan Grant.

The junior guard scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter to spark a 31-9 blitz by the second-ranked Bulldogs and they never looked back en route to a 68-37 Class D North semifinal win at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Shead girls cruise past Washburn in Class D North semifinal

BANGOR, Maine — It wasn’t pretty at times on the offensive end for the Shead girls basketball team Thursday night, but the Eastport-based Tigerettes put on a defensive clinic in returning to the Class D North regional championship game.

Coach Dean Preston’s club pressured, harassed and overwhelmed sixth-ranked Washburn all over the Cross Insurance Center floor as the second-ranked Tigerettes posted an impressive 51-29 victory over the sixth-ranked Beavers.

The reigning regional champions (18-2) will look to repeat on Saturday morning at 9:05 against top-ranked Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook (19-1), which knocked off No. 4 Easton 48-42 in the later semifinal.

Pupils share patriotic program

On Feb. 16, the pre-K and kindergarten classes from the David J. Lyon Washburn District Elementary School presented a patriotic program to honor the great country of the United States and show what they had been learning in their classrooms.  

The students did a wonderful job singing patriotic songs and sharing facts about some United States symbols and famous people.

The Washburn 21st Century After School Program joined the classes for the patriotic program. Middle school ASP students prepared snacks for the evening and some decorations in the gym.

Elementary ASP students prepared the art show “America the Beautiful.” The audience voted for their favorite art work by putting a quarter into a jar. Twenty-five drawings were displayed. Mitchell Hewitt won with 60 votes,followed by Amanda Beckwith and Lakeisha Good, both with 17 votes. Special prizes included a gift certificate for the Pizza ‘n Art for Tweens event at the Wintergreen Arts Center in Presque Isle, and free admission for the Presque Isle House of Bounce.

Freshman helps lift Houlton girls past Hermon, into ‘B’ North final

BANGOR, Maine — Freshman Abbie Worthley came off the bench to hit a pair of critical 3-pointers, one in the fourth quarter and another in overtime, and the defending two-time state champion Houlton High School Shiretowners rallied for a 37-33 win over Hermon in their Class B North semifinal Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
