To the editor:
What was the impact of the Great Depression on Maine, and how did different communities respond to the Depression? These are the questions I am trying to answer. I am putting together a traveling exhibit that will illustrate how Mainers coped with the financial struggles of the 1930s. To illustrate the exhibit, I am seeking original photographs from the period. I am looking for pictures of ordinary people in local communities, including work and home life, gardening, food preservation, town farms, community meetings, etc. I am also seeking examples of town “scrips” which were issued by some towns and used in lieu of money to pay their bills.
If you have any such items that you could share, please contact me (581-1688 or vial e-mail at richard.hollinger@umit.me.edu) at UMO’s Fogler Library. Doing so will help to preserve a vital part of Maine history.
