To the editor:
You have an estimated 30 Senior Citizens that have, at one time or another, contributed to the making of this city.
There developed, in time, a group that became what is known in our society as the Elderly or Seniors and became accustomed to gathering from time to time to talk and perhaps enjoy a luncheon. Many thoughts go into, perhaps an arrangement to gather at a park for a quiet gathering. Other Seniors from other towns are also invited to share, without costs, in these gatherings and from this, we have been told that these other areas have sponsored their groups with a sizeable stipend in order to cover any expenses that could develop, such as transportation fees or perhaps a personal need or requirement at the time.
To our amazement, we have discovered that our home city (Presque Isle) chooses not to contribute to this cause in any way. Now we will talk about statistics: The gatherings have been for a period of 15 years so far and have included a total, approximately 60, many from subsidized groups, from the following areas, Ashland, Mars Hill, Bridgewater, Westfield, Fort Fairfield, Blaine and others too.
In closing, Presque Isle does not wish to assist their Senior groups in any way and they do not hesitate to charge this sizeable fee of $50 for five hours at Mantle Lake Park once a year.
Let’s hope they never become Seniors.
