Principal Susie Schloeman dressed as the school’s mascot as she led the fifth-grade class outside to show off their throwing skills. Students stood behind a line and threw their wood as far as they could, at which point their distance was measured by tape.
“This is our fifth year of having the woodchuck event,” said Schloeman, “and we’ve kept a running record of the winning throwers over the last four years. Normally we would have our Winter Carnival around this time of year but it was moved to March, so we thought this would be a good way to open everything up for next month.”
Schloeman says she was inspired to hold the competition after watching a Geico commercial in which a man scolded woodchucks for throwing his wood.
In addition to throwing wood, the fourth graders colored woodchucks and displayed their art outside their class. Kids were also treated to a woodchuck cake and cupcakes.
“We started doing it four years ago and now it’s becoming a tradition,” said Schloeman. “It gets kids outside and lets them show off their throwing skills.”
