115 Years Ago – 1900

    Long haul — One day recently, Frank Hammond, with one pair of horses, hauled 27,000 shingles at one load from Barton’s mills in Perham to the B. and A. depot in Caribou, a distance of ten miles.  During a month of 26 working days, Mr. Hammond hauled 53,721 feet of long lumber over the same route.

    Dramatic performance — H. Price Webber, the manager of the well-known Boston Comedy Company will present a first-class dramatic performance in Clark’s hall Saturday, September 15.  Doors open at 7:15.  Reserved seats 35 cents.

100 Years Ago – September 16, 1915

    One way — Under the direction of John McElwain, work is being done to fill over the Prestile Stream in order for automobiles to make their way to Presque Isle.  Although not finished, it is in passable condition for cars to make their way there.

    Potato milestone — Several farmers have begun to dig potatoes.  The price opened at $1.00 per barrel, then dropped to 75 cents.  It is also an important date since on this day in 1860, or 55 years ago, the first potatoes were shipped out of the county.  At the time, there was no railroad so the potatoes had to be transported by river, then boat.

75 Years Ago – September 12, 1940

     Expansion of Park — Further expansion and development of the Aroostook State Park at Quoggy Jo Mountain, four miles south of Presque Isle, was discussed following a tour of N.S. Stowell of Dixfield, chairman of the Maine State Park Commission.  Aroostook State Park was established two years ago on a tract of land deeded to the State by the city of Presque Isle.

    Nine-Leaf clover? — If you thought a four-leaf clover is lucky, what’s a nine-leaf clover?  That’s the question being asked by James L. Iott, Caribou who was lucky (or unlucky) to find such a variety on his farm on the Fort Fairfield Road, Friday.

50 Years Ago – September 16, 1965

    Town purchases new police car — Town Council has approved the purchase of a new police patrol car to replace the vehicle which was damaged when Patrolman Thomas May of the local police force failed to negotiate the turn near the Lions Picnic Grounds last week and left the road for a ditch.  The patrolman, who was in pursuit for another vehicle, was not injured.

    Enrollment tops 3,000 — For the first time, Limestone schools have topped 3,000 students.  563 are in grades 1-8 at the Limestone Elementary School, 869 are in grades 1-3 at the Harrison Elementary School, 1,052 are in grades 3-8 at the Damon Elementary School and Limestone High School enrollment totals 536.

25 Years Ago – September 12, 1990

    First creative playground installed — Over 30 adults and children gathered at Hilltop School Thursday to start assembling Caribou’s first creative playground unit.  Brenda Felch, principal at the Hilltop School, and Norma Bennett, school secretary, provided workers with lunch and refreshments throughout the morning.

 

    An oddity — It’s not everyday when you have a 17 x 14 white mushroom growing in your backyard.  But that’s exactly what Kathryn Hersey has growing in her home on the Old Washburn Road.  It’s one of five growing in the same area.
