Caribou dentist provides free operation in an act of kindness

CARIBOU, Maine — In an uncommon act of generosity, Dentist Dr. David Smith performed free surgery for Caribou resident Kimberly Williams earlier this month.

“I think any dentist would have done the same thing,” said Dr. Smith. “This is why we built our house as part of the office.  All I have to do is take a walk downstairs in cases like this one. Kimberly is a good lady and I’m glad we could help her.”

The dental injuries occurred when Smith fell down on the morning of her friend’s wedding. The accident resulted in one tooth being broken and the other one driving through her bottom lip. Williams is a single parent with no health coverage. According to Smith, she is currently saving up for her eighth eye surgery in November, so she could not afford the dental operation.

“Since they took me in on a Saturday, they didn’t have a dentist available at the ER” said Williams. “After a while they came back in and said they’d found a dentist for me.”

“My daughter in-law called and asked me if my husband could help take care of a patient,” said Dr. Smith’s wife Phyllis, who gave Williams some of her blankets during the surgery.

Smith says that while this is not something he does every week, he has done it in the past for patients in similar situations.

“I was in tremendous pain at the time,” said Williams. “I couldn’t handle it alone, so I prayed to God for help. I believe he put these people here to help me. I am so thankful for Dr. Cameron Scott, Heather Montgomery, Vodi Cote, and the rest of the ER staff.”
