Volunteers and support sought for annual festival

August Festival updates

The dates for the upcoming annual event are Friday, August 14, Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16. The theme for the year is “There’s No Place Like Home.” This year’s festival king and queen, along with the parade grand marshal, will be announced in the near future.

A search for members of WHS, Class of 1960, is ongoing, and any phone numbers, addresses — physical or e-mail — of alumni will be appreciated. The special 50th reunion will be held during the August Festival weekend in 2010, but much work is needed to start as soon as possible, and those with information please contact either Nancy Todd at rltodd66@myfairpoint.net or Helen Hause at hhause@maine.rr.com

Friday night Alumni Banquet — Linda Seward at 455-8373, and guests are asked to bring place settings, a salad or dessert or a main dish. The evening will begin with a social hour starting at 6 p.m., with the supper to follow at 6:30 p.m. The menu of rolls, baked beans, hotdogs, coffee, tea and punch and will be provided.
Also on Friday night, there will be a Rotary-sponsored outdoor ‘walk-in’ theatre which will be held in the field behind the Salmon Brook Historical Society museum and barn. The movie title will be announced in the near future.

The Washburn Rotarians will be providing the Saturday night meal that will feature a menu of beans, hotdogs, and a variety of salads.
The Saturday night show will be held in the park and feature the talents of Sound Friendship and will begin at 6:30 p.m. and go until around 9 p.m. when the fireworks begin.
The next scheduled August Festival meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 15, at the Washburn Civic Center starting at 6:30 p.m. Support, including volunteers and donations, is needed for an event this size to be a success. All input is welcome, and any interested residents are urged to attend. Any donations may be sent to August Festival, P.O. Box 45 Washburn, ME  04786 .
The Festival Committee relies on community support for this event, and if your group or civic organization would like to partake in the Festival in any way, please feel free to contain Cindy Boot at 455-8464 or e-mail her at keithboot@msn.com.

Events/reminders

The Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center on Monday, July 13.
There will be special outdoor singing each Wednesday through July 22 at the Town Park on Main Street. Included will be lots of good gospel music, singing and a brief message starting at 6:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs or listen from your vehicle. All are welcome.
TOPS hold their regular meetings each Monday at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse, starting with weigh-in at 4:15 p.m. and a meeting to follow from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The Washburn Soup Kitchen schedule includes regular meals on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, served from 3 to 5 p.m. The kitchen also does up food boxes whenever they are open, and the kitchen is open to any citizens in the tri-community area.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society museum has announced their summer schedule and the hours will be from noon to 4 p.m., and, on Wednesdays, from 8 to 11 a.m. To arrange for tours at other times, please call 455-8279 well in advance so arrangements can be made.
Friendly Coop order week for July will be from Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 24, with delivery scheduled for Friday, July 31. The Maine Bureau of Parks and Land are requesting volunteers for assisting with the Salmon Brook Lake Bog Trail in Perham.  Assistance is needed from Wednesday, July 8, through Tuesday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 22, through Tuesday, July 27. Work being done includes clearing trail, bog bridging and observation platform work. Contact people are Sarah Gaffney at 624-6092 or Jeanne Curran at 287-3156.
The library’s summer reading program has been in effect since Monday, June 29, and will continue through Friday, August 7. There is still time to join in the fun. Those interested can pick up registration forms along with time sheets at the library.
The library will be holding their summer programs each Tuesday from July 7 through August 4. Grades 5 to 8 will have the time between 10:30 a.m. and 12 noon. Grades K-4 will enjoy their time from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Each group will do a craft, read a story and have snacks, as well as some fun surprises.

Rec Center schedule

On Wednesday, July 8, there will be basketball for grades K-2 from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 take to the field from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will also be swimming lessons in Presque Isle from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and T-ball will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. There will be a major league ball game at Limestone at 5:30 p.m.
On Thursday, July 9, there will be soccer for grades K-2 from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 have the field from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Also on Thursday, July 9, there will be arts and crafts at the Rec Center with grade 5-8 working from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades K-4 creating from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.
There will be a minor league game at Easton at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, and the field trip of the week will feature hiking Haystack Mountain from 9:30 a.m. and enjoying lunch at Thomas Brewer Park.
On Monday, July 13, there will be swimming lessons in Presque Isle from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be K-2 basketball from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 play from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will also be a major league game at Mars Hill at 5:30 p.m.

The free summer lunch and breakfast program is also ongoing, with breakfasts available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunches being served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. These meals will be served at the elementary school cafeteria and are available at no cost to those age 18 and younger.
