STOCKHOLM – Richard “Dick” Callison, 79, died at Northern Maine Medical Center on October 23. Dick was born on October 21, 1935, in Rupert, West Virginia, the son of Leslie John Callison and Maye L. (Surbaugh) Callison Harding.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955, and met and married Linda Gunnerson on May 30, 1959, while stationed at Loring AFB.
Dick and Linda had three children, twins, Rick and Vicki, and daughter, Cheryl, who died in 1982. They lived in Caribou and Stockholm, Lakenheath AFB in England, Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona, and Holloman AFB in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He served during the Vietnam War with deployments to Ubon Airfield, Thailand in 1971, Takhli, Thailand in 1972, and was Honorably Discharged in 1977.
Dick earned his commercial pilot license, while stationed at Holloman in 1974, and was handy at many trades from carpentry to auto mechanics. Following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, his family relocated to Clovis, New Mexico, where he owned and operated his own plumbing supply business. In 1980, Dick and Linda moved back to Stockholm, ME, where he worked as a carpenter, and on road/lawn crews at Loring AFB.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and member of the American Legion Post 136 in Stockholm for 31 years.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: son, Rick and wife, Nettie Callison of Clovis, NM; daughter, Vicki King and husband, Vaughn McLaughlin of Fort Fairfield, ME; grandchildren, Sunshyne and husband, Lupe Ruiz of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kellas and wife, Kristi Callison of Clovis, NM, Christi Rosado of Fort Fairfield, and Randy King of Stockholm; great-grandchildren, Cammi, Graedon, and Jameson of Fort Fairfield, Anthony, Jonathan and Matthew of Hawaii, and Joshua and Lundynn of New Mexico. Dick is also survived by a sister, Shelby Lisby of Austin, TX, many nieces and nephews.
Richard was predeceased by his parents and daughter, Cheryl Lynn Callison.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Caribou, ME, Rev. Robert Smith officiating.
