Opal Curless scored two unassisted goals, the second breaking a 1-1 tie 13 minutes into the second half, to lead Mount Desert Island to a 2-1 road victory Saturday over the Caribou Vikings.
The loss put an end to Caribou’s five-game winning streak. The Trojans improved to 4-2, while the Vikes fell to 5-3.
Curless had opened the scoring with 11:55 to play in the first half, but Sarah Doak knotted the score by tallying off a Maddie Doucette assist just 1:14 before intermission.
After Curless’s second goal, she moved back to play defense and helped prevent Caribou from mounting any serious offensive pressure the rest of the way.
Both goalkeepers faced 10 shots, with Caribou’s Morgan Outing saving seven and MDI’s Keely McConomy turning away four.
The Caribou boys’ win total for the season remained at one after tying MDI Saturday, 1-1.
Dustin Bouchard scored 16 minutes into the second half on a header to give the Vikings the lead following a scoreless first half, but the Trojans answered with 12 minutes left in regulation as Joe Grubb netted a goal off a Jack Sasner assist.
Ethan Plourde had nine saves on 14 shots for the Vikings, who are now 1-5-2 overall. Simon Hulbert made eight saves on 17 shots for 1-4-1 MDI.
Earlier in the week, Caribou made the trip down Interstate 95 to take on the Old Town Coyotes, with the boys’ game played last Tuesday and the girls’ contest a day later.
The Viking boys again played to a scoreless first half, but the combination of Drew Coulombe to Niko Knapp came through twice early in the second half to give OT the advantage. Caribou drew to within a goal when Taylor Thibodeau converted off a Michael Hunter corner kick, but the Coyotes sealed it when Jeremy Gogan scored off a rebound with 11 minutes left.
The girls’ game was an offensive showcase by both teams, with Caribou coming up with a 5-4 triumph.
Maddie Doucette and Gabrielle Marquis both scored early goals to stake the visiting Vikings to a 2-0 lead. Old Town then scored three unanswered goals to move out in front, but Doak tied it on a direct kick before the Coyotes regained the lead on a Lauren Martin goal.
Caribou wasn’t finished, however, as Doak scored off a Doucette assist to tie it before Bria Judd broke the deadlock and by scoring the game’s final goal 24 minutes into the second half.
The Caribou teams resume play this week, as the girls are in Bangor to take on John Bapst this afternoon at 5 p.m. The boys’ matchup between the two schools is at the same time Thursday.
The Viking squads will then host Hermon in a Saturday doubleheader. The girls’ game is at 2 p.m. and the boys’ game follows at approximately 4 p.m.
