Caribou Secession Committee: Why we’re here

To the editor:
To the people who are concerned about their homes, businesses and community. I am a concerned citizen and as a lot of people know, I have been in front of the City Council many times trying to get them to understand that they need to stop wasteful spending.
After many years of trying to get changes made to this community, to be able to keep taxes affordable, and still have all the service we need, we have never been able to change their minds, and exhausting all our efforts, we as a group have decided that the only way to rid ourselves from this out-of-control city government is to start our own township, which will be called Lyndon.
We started this new adventure about nine months ago and believe me this is not an easy task. So I would like to explain to you what we had to do in order to get where we are today.
• We had to outline the map that is going to be called Lyndon.
• Then we had to find out how many people live in this area and how many voters there are.
• We had to find out how many students live in this area, to make sure that the kids still have the same education offered to them as they have today.
• We had to find out how many lane miles of road there are in this area of Lyndon so we can make sure that plowing and maintenance is done the same way it is today.
• We had to get the full valuation of the properties in this area to see how much we had to set the mil rate at in this new town of Lyndon.
• We then had to come up with a budget to operate this town of Lyndon along with a Charter.
There is a lot more than what I have talked about, but I wanted to give you some idea about the research effort so far. Our move now is to get everybody to sign the petitions that we need so we can go forward with this very important venture. We can’t and will not allow “the powers that be” to drive us out of our homes and out of our businesses. So, please join us and sign the petition that we need to keep this new adventure going forward.
By the way, don’t let anybody try to tell you that you will be worse off. You will still have Police, Fire and Ambulance service that you have today, plus your children will still have the same schooling and busing as they have today and the roads will be taken care of the same as they are today. The only difference you will see is your taxes will be less.
So, once again, please join and support us in making this change happen. If you have any questions please call, Paul Camping at 498-6120 or Maynard St. Peter at 492-7291. You can also go to the Facebook page Caribou Secession Committee.
