Ann King, RN, CCEMPT, CIC has been named Caregiver of the Year at Cary Medical Center. The hospital also nominated King for the Maine Hospital Association’s annual statewide Caregiver of the Year Award.
King wears many hats at Cary. She is a certified infection control nurse, and critical care emergency medicine transport paramedic. She was recognized at the hospital’s All Staff Forum on June 10. She was presented with a special hospital print and a certificate from the Maine Hospital Association affirming that she was a nominee for the statewide award.
Kris Doody, RN, MSB, FACHE, and CEO at Cary said that King is well deserving of the recognition.
“To be recognized at this level you really have to have a passion for your work and go above and beyond. Ann has certainly done that during her entire nursing career and today she stands as one of the finest health care professionals in the country,” said Doody. “Not only has Ann provided outstanding patient care and leadership as a nurse here at Cary, but she also heads our organ donor program with the passion and commitment that has earned her the respect and admiration of the staff at the New England Organ Bank.”

King recently coordinated a 5K road walk/run to benefit the New England Organ Bank. It was the first event of its kind and raised some $1,500 for the program. The event also helped spread awareness as to the importance of organ donation.  Members of the hospital’s medical staff and various departments worked with King in support of the project.
During the All Staff Forum, CEO Doody, read from the nomination that was submitted on King’s behalf. The nomination cited her dedication to her nursing career and her work with Caribou Fire and Ambulance Service and with the development of the fixed wing air ambulance.
Scott Susi, chief of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Service praised the work that King has done for his department.
“Ann is one of the leading and founding members of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance and Cary Medical Center flight service,” said Susi, who attended the award presentation. “Ann not only goes out of her way to provide the best of patient care in the worst of times for patients, but she does it with a smile and an attitude that keeps the entire crew at rest and focused on the task at hand. Ann’s attention to detail in patient care reflects strongly on the nurses and paramedics she has been a preceptor for. Ann’s knowledge and caring attitude are a tribute to the city of Caribou.”
King earned her LPN in 1983. She graduated from Northern Maine Community College and earned her associate’s degree as a registered nurse in 1988. She worked at The Aroostook Medical Center from 1982–‘94 and joined Cary Medical Center in 1994. She has extensive experience in multiple departments including intensive care, recovery, operating room, obstetrics and served as nurse manager for the Emergency Department, and ultimately nursing supervisor. She now works as an infectious disease specialist and employee health nurse.
As Cary’s nominee for the Maine Hospital Association Statewide Caregiver of the Year, King received a certificate of recognition from the MHA.
