A couple of varsity track and field meets were held last week, with Presque Isle hosting the first one last Tuesday and Caribou the second on Saturday. Both featured all the Aroostook County schools with programs, with Saturday’s also including John Bapst of Bangor, Orono and Central of East Corinth.
In the end, it was a good week for the Viking squads. The boys were victorious in both competitions, while the girls won in Presque Isle and finished second to Orono in the home meet.
At CHS, winning events for the Viking boys were Kameron Manter in the 100-meter dash (11.79 seconds), Emilio Garcia in the 300 hurdles (46.72), Keith Draper in the javelin (131 feet, 7 inches) and the 4×400 relay team of Dominic Judd, Manter, Alex Losieniecki and Draper (3:48.34).
Manter also was the runner-up in the 400 (55.14), while Losieniecki was second in the 800 (2:12.16). Garcia took second in the 110 hurdles (17.53), while Judd was third in the event (18.3) and second to Garcia in the 300 hurdles (45.25). Tyler Strid took second in the 1,600 race walk (8:59.17).
Caleb Daigle of Fort Fairfield had a brilliant day by capturing the 200 (25.25), the 400 (54.31) and discus (114 feet, 1 inch) and coming in second in the 100 (11.8).
Limestone-MSSM had a particularly good day in field events, as Thomas Hamilton was second in the discus (106 feet, 7 inches) and third in the shot put (37 feet, 4 inches). Teammate Andrew Shade was third in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and Grier Osterman third in the triple jump (36 feet, 4-3/4 inches). Osterman was also second in the 200 (24.67).
The Viking girls’ wins were registered by Sarah Doak in the 1,600 (5:45.25), Eileen Patton in the 300 hurdles (51.98), Kaitlin Ring in the triple jump (30 feet, 6 inches), Alissa Irving in the 1,600 race walk (8:43.66) and both the 4×400 relay team, consisting of Doak, Madeline Gudde, Patton and Simone Michaud (4:37.97) and the 4×800 relay team, made up of Gudde, Kendra Furber, Robyn Larrabee and Julia Page (11:24.28).
Michaud was second in the 200 (29.31) and the 400 (1:05.51), Doak was third in the 800 (2:40.62) and third in the triple jump (29 feet, 10-1/2 inches), Sammy Camy second in the triple jump (30 feet, 4 inches) and third in the 300 hurdles (56.73), Draper second in the discus (81 feet, 2 inches), Kate Finnemore second in the race walk (10:03.81) and Ring third in the long jump (13 feet, 4-1/2 inches). The 4×100 relay team of Emilee Susi, Ring, Patton and Camy placed second (56.7).
Theresa Maynard of Fort Fairfield took the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), while Janae Libby of the Tigers was second in the pole vault (7 feet).
Limestone-MSSM’s top effort was recorded by Abigail Harvey, who was fourth in the 300 hurdles (58.43). Tyra Shaw placed in both the 100 and the long jump as Washburn’s top competitor.
Claiming event victories in Presque Isle on the boys’ side were Daigle in the 100, 200 and discus; Manter in the 400, Garcia in the 110 hurdles, Osterman in the 300 hurdles, Mitchell St. Peter of Caribou in the race walk and Draper in the javelin. Caribou’s 4×100 relay team of Richard Newland, Derek Richardson, Draper and Manter came in first place, while the 4×400 relay team of Manter, Newland, Draper and Losienieck also won.
Among the girls’ winners were Tori Koch of Washburn in the 100, 200 and long jump; Carsyn Koch of Washburn in the high jump, the 800 and the 1,600; Michaud in the 400, Camy in the triple jump and Irving in the race walk. Furber and Libby tied for first in the pole vault.
The 4×400 team from Caribou, consisting of Michaud, Doak, Furber and Lauren Chapman, placed first, as did the Vikings’ 4×800 team of Chelsea Haney, Nerrissa Larrabee, Kristyn Maley and Julia Page.
