To the editor:
I’m writing this letter in support of Ronald Rushinal. As you know, Ronald is a Vietnam veteran. He wasn’t drafted, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He did his duty when a lot of young men went to Canada or other places to avoid the draft. He was there when his country needed him.
He came home to Ashland, raised his children in Ashland and paid his taxes in Ashland. He worked hard for what he got, in all kinds of weather.
When he inherited his family farm, he tried to correct some injustices that were imposed on his family farm by some of the earlier town fathers. He has tried, at great expense to himself, to get this injustice corrected for a great number of years, at no expense to the town of Ashland.
In earlier years, the town put a lot of roadblocks in his path to prevent him from getting his property back that was illegally taken from his parents. This property is the so-called Nowland Road. It has divided his beautiful field and has created a hardship for him as well as the town of Ashland. (For the taxpayers, the cost of maintenance, calcium, grading and graveling etc.; for Ronald, a poor hay crop because of dust, people driving in his field, bottles, trash, etc., being discarded by uncaring people).
The present Town Council has voted to close the so-called Nowland Road and correct an injustice that was done to Ronald’s family in years past. They should be commended for this.
I urge all citizens of the town of Ashland, who believe in the law, to do the right thing, and give him his land back, that was taken illegally years ago. It’s a shame and a black eye on the citizens of Ashland, if they fail to close the so-called Nowland Road. It’s a terrible injustice to make a veteran, who served his country proudly and faithfully, to fight for what was rightfully his, when all it takes is a simple vote.
So, people of Ashland, you say you support veterans — prove it by voting to close the so-called Nowland Road, and make Ronald’s family farm whole again, so that his mother, father and uncle can rest in peace, knowing the farm they purchased, is whole again. Do what is right and prove that you do support your veterans and then you can truly hold your head high.
