ASHLAND – Local police are teaming up with members of the public on a physical fitness program that will last through this fall.
“We have a program called Walk Around Town, designed to promote good health. We are encouraging folks to participate during the coming months,” said Cyr Martin, chief of the Ashland Police Department.
Martin said the program got under way May 18 and will end in late fall.
“The program takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:30 p.m., weather permitting,” he said.
On those days, the walk begins at the Ashland Post Office and continues around town, traveling to Main St. and then up Route 163 and crossing onto Hayward St. and down Exchange St., according to Martin.
“My goal is to get as many kids and adults out walking and enjoying the community. A member of the police department – mostly me – will participate on the daily walks,” said Martin.
This walk will provide the public with an opportunity to have regular access to law enforcement, giving participants a chance to air concerns and communicate with Martin directly.
“This walk will enable you, the public, to talk to us about any police concerns you may have,” Martin said.
Those taking part in the walks will be eligible for prizes, based on miles traveled.
“A log of people walking and how often will be kept. At the end of each month, the person with the most miles walked will win a gift certificate,” said Martin, noting police officers aren’t eligible for prizes. “The certificates are being donated by a local business.”
Martin looks forward to spending time with area citizens and is hoping for a good turnout throughout the coming months.
“Please come out and join us. There are no age requirements, just a desire to get healthy,” said Martin.
