The Limestone-MSSM girls’ basketball team ran its winning streak to begin the season to 14 games following three more victories last week.
The Eagles, the top-ranked team in Eastern Maine Clas D, were challenged in victories over Greater Houlton Christian Academy and Ashland before gaining an easy win over Hodgdon at home Monday. Limestone-MSSM has two significant challenges ahead as the team plays at Van Buren Thursday and at Fort Fairfield Saturday. The Eagles won the first matchups against those squads, but injuries to some key players will make the rematches difficult.
The Crusaders are currently in second place in the standings with their 9-3 record, while the Tigers, at 7-4, are in fourth place.
Coach Ryan O’Neal said that Jordyn Hopkins suffered a mild concussion in last Tuesday’s game against GHCA. She will be out against the Crusaders, but O’Neal is hoping she’ll be able to return against the Tigers.
Sophomore point guard Chelsey Pelkey, also out with a concussion, is “starting to feel better,” according to O’Neal, and “may be able to start activity soon.
“Getting her back for the playoffs is still our goal,” he said.
The Caribou Vikings’ boys basketball team is now 9-2 after recording a victory over Foxcroft Academy at home Saturday and then traveling to Bangor’s new Cross Insurance Center Monday and downing the John Bapst Crusaders.
Caribou, currently ranked fifth in EM Class B, also has some challenges ahead on its schedule. The team will host Mount Desert Island (9-3 and in third place) Friday and then Ellsworth (5-6, 11th place) Saturday before Hermon (7-3, eighth place) comes to town for a make-up game Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
The Viking girls have now lost five of their last six and eight of 10 after dropping games to Houlton, Foxcroft Academy and John Bapst in recent action.
The Caribou girls are now 4-8 and in 14th place in the division heading into the home games against MDI, Ellsworth and Hermon.
