Spring outings planned for Caribou area adults

Officials with the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department recently announced the upcoming “Take it Outside” series, a variety of outings designed to get adults active in the outdoors.
Open to anyone over 18, the events will begin in March and will lead participants to various local destinations and activities. All trips will depart from the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center. The schedule includes the following.    • March 18: Ice fishing at Madawaska Lake. The fee is $25 for those ages 18-69 and $20 for those 70 and over, and includes equipment, lunch and fishing license. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held March 19.
• March 22-23: Overnight trip to Maccanamac Camps on Spider Lake, to enjoy ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and the like. The registration fee of $125 includes fishing license, transportation, food, lodging and all necessary gear.
• March 25: A snowshoeing adventure exploring the Caribou High School Ski Trails. The cost is $20 and includes snowshoe rentals, poles, guided instruction and a hot dog lunch. The weather date is March 26.
• March 29-30: Overnight trip into Deboullie. Gear will be available for those who do not have their own. Registration of $60 will include ski, snowshoe and pole rentals, dinner Saturday night and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.
• April 1: Cross-country skiing on the Caribou Country Club Nordic ski trails; rabbits and songbirds are said to make these trails a unique experience. The fee is $20, which includes transportation, equipment and lunch.
• April 8: An outing to several area deer yards with wildlife biologist Rich Hoppe to see where animals survive the long winter. Participants will also stop at a greenhouse to design and plant their own flower pots to bring home. Registration of $30 includes lunch, outdoor planter and transportation.
• April 19: An e xploration of maple syrup making in The County. Visits will be made to two local maple syrup producers, with a sit-down lunch in between. The cost is $30 and includes transportation and lunch.
