“Dandy” Candy

“Our Candy is a Dandy” is the favorite tune playing right now at Halfway Home Pet Rescue. Candy is a beautiful, very sweet-natured, 7-month-old female who will make a trip to the Animal Refuge League in Portland this week.
According to Normal Milton, HHPR president, the highly respected Animal Refuge League previously took 14 happy, healthy cats and kittens from the Caribou shelter in December to help with the overload of local cats.

Upon learning that HHPR was frantically looking for enough spaces for 30 cats from one location, the League notified Milton that they would take several more. “Thirteen cats will head downstate this week, including our sweet Candy,” Milton said. “Sheila Conroy will transport the cats for the Portland rescue.”
Milton noted that all of the cats they have sent downstate have been placed in good homes. “The League has fantastic resources and a larger population to draw from for fast adoption,” she added.
“I am amazed at the wonderful adult cats that we have had for several months who go to Portland and are adopted within a couple of days,” Milton said. “The league is amazing in taking the time to let us know about each adoption, and there have been many joyful tears in the eyes of the volunteers when they learn of the happy ending that could not happen here.”
She added, “It is nice that they recognize HHPR has a large emotional bonding with these mature cats, and being a part of them going to a permanent home is the volunteers’ paycheck.”
The 30 new cats that HHPR will be caring for will need extra time to adjust and learn to trust humans, as they have not had much human contact,” Milton explained. “We are glad that we are able to help. This person walked into someone else’s mess and took ownership to help these 30 cats by calling HHPR. That is the sign of a highly responsible and compassionate person.”
The cats coming in at this time will need a great deal of one-on-one behavior modification, which is very time-consuming but necessary to socialize and teach the cats that humans can be trusted. That, noted Milton, is what HHPR does best.
The largest need that the rescue has right now is for a great deal of extra cat litter. The favored litter is Fresh Step or Tidy Cat. Also, gifts of Arm and Hammer Litter deodorant would be greatly appreciated. Milton added that Tracfone minute cards are valued as the rescue cannot afford the cost of land line service.
