LIMESTONE, Maine — Officials with the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) and the Limestone Recreation Department unveiled the Mark Brewer Memorial Disc Golf course in an afternoon ceremony Oct. 24.
During the grand opening Natasha Brewer, wife of the course’s namesake, threw the first disc.
The majority of the construction was completed by students of the Loring Job Corps Center, where Mark Brewer was the longtime construction instructor. Natasha Brewer also teaches at the LJCC, where she is the director of career development.
“Mark Brewer unexpectedly passed away just prior to the construction of the course, and because of his dedication to his students and his excitement for this project, we wanted to dedicate the course to him,” said Sara Shaw, parks and recreation director for the town of Limestone.
Shaw went on to share that Brewer was a mentor to his students, inspiring them to complete the work that he began on the disc golf course. Brewer’s passing deeply affected the Job Corps community and the completion of the disc golf project was a way in which his students could pay homage to their former instructor, an individual devoted to his community, working with local youth, and overcoming challenges.
Also contributing to the construction of the course were Brooker Construction, Northern Athletic Supply, and Gervais Fencing.
The Limestone Recreation Department and MSSM collaborated on the project and together applied for a grant from Healthy Aroostook, receiving nearly $1,000.
After the grand opening, the course will be open for public use. There is no fee for using the course. Discs can be rented from the Recreation Department with a refundable deposit.
The course is located behind the Limestone Community School (LCS). Individuals wishing to use the course can park in the parking lot near the LCS playground.
