Spencer McElwain of Caribou, right, edged out P.J. Gorneault, also of Caribou, at the finish line in the “Miracle Mile: Makenna and Maggie’s Race for Research” held July 3 in Houlton.

HOULTON — The “Miracle Mile: Makenna and Maggie’s Race for Research” was held July 3 and the race raised over $5,000, which will go to two worthwhile organizations working to find cures for childrens’ cancers — “Curesearch” and the “Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation.”

The overall winner was Spencer McElwain of Caribou in 4 minutes and 13 seconds, followed by PJ Gorneault of Caribou in 4:14 and Curtis Wheeler of Presque Isle in 4:21. Caribou High School and UM-Presque Isle graduate Chris Rines, now living in Houlton, was fourth in  4:41 and Ty Thurlow of Lee rounded out the top five in 4:51.
“The times were great and seemed fast,” said Rines, who helped organize the race and estimated that more than 250 participated.
“We had a huge response to the race from both walkers and runners and we couldn’t have been happier. We did run into some trouble when we started running out of bibs and pins. Our finish line and registration crew did great with the little resources they had.
“We hope in the future we will be able to support a large number like this and provide the best possible race experience in the County,” he added.
