Event to Benefit Wounded Warriors Project
Cary Medical Center will sponsor a 5K running event on Saturday, August 3, using the trails on the hospital campus.
This will be the second annual Spike It Up event and will feature a new element with obstacle-course-type challenges.
The event will also benefit the Wounded Warriors Project with 50 percent of proceeds going to the project and the other 50 percent benefiting the Cary trail system.
Aaron Tomlinson, athletic trainer and physical therapy assistant at Cary, directs the race.
“We had a great response to our run last year, and this year we are going to make it a little more interesting by including a few military-style obstacles on the route. We hope to keep adding more elements every year,” Tomlinson said.
Tomlinson believes the fact that the project is benefiting the Wounded Warriors Project will add something very special to this year’s run.
“We have so many veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, that anything we can do to help these veterans make a smooth transition will be a real privilege for us,” Tomlinson commented. “The Wounded Warriors Project is unique in that it helps to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured veterans and helps injured service members aid and assist each other.”
The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. on the Cary campus near the Outpatient Rehabilitation Services building. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $15 individually or, for couples, $10 each. The first 100 to register will receive an event T-shirt.
The race will be held rain or shine and will feature six racing divisions based on age brackets, 0—12, 13—19, 20—29, 30—39, 40—49, and 50 plus.
Winners in each division will receive prizes with the overall male and female winners earning a new pair of running shoes.
Other sponsors for the event include the Maine Veterans’ Homes, Sleeper’s in Caribou, Big Cheese Pizza and Tim Horton’s.
