Lawrence Barthelemy

CARIBOU — Lawrence “Larry” Barthelemy Jr. was born on Oct. 25, 1927 in Somerville, Mass., where he grew up and went to school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Oct. 24, 1947 and served as an aviation radio repairman.

In the Navy, Barthelemy spent time at several different bases. He first served at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, then transferred to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.
Barthelemy’s skills as an aviation radio repairman were in such high demand that he was called upon to be an instructor at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. He would return to Guantanamo Bay until being honorably discharged on Jan. 30, 1950 as an aviation radioman 2nd class.
Following his service in the Navy, Barthelemy returned to Massachusetts. He was a self-taught electronic engineer and provided precision measurement services for nuclear power plants. Barthelemy worked for a company called I-Tech and also ran a family owned appliance business called GWC Refrigeration for 12 years.
Barthelemy and his wife Elinor raised four children in Newburyport. Barthelemy was a devoted family man who made it his priority to care for and be there for his family. He and Elinor retired to Florida in the mid-1980s, where they lived in the Fort Pierce area.
Barthelemy lived briefly with his son and daughter-in-law in Caribou before moving into the Maine Veterans’ Home earlier this year.
At MVH, Barthelemy enjoys participating in any type of event involving food. He enjoys taking part in the home’s activities and loves to ballroom dance.
