Caribou senior Alexa Massey chases down a shot during last Tuesday’s home victory over Presque Isle.

The Eastern Maine Region I tennis singles tournament took place Tuesday in Caribou after being postponed from Saturday due to rain.
The seeded players for the Caribou Vikings were Ashley Richards, No. 1 for girls; Alexa Massey, No. 5 for girls; Ethan Plourde, No. 4 for boys; and Michael Marquis, No. 6 for boys.

The players surviving Tuesday earned the right to make the trip to Lewiston May 25 for the state tournament.
The Caribou girls avenged an early-season loss by defeating Presque Isle last Tuesday, 4-1. The Vikes swept the singles matches, with Richards, Massey and Erin Patton all winning. The second doubles team of Makayla Bouchard and Anna Soderberg also came out on top. Bria Judd earned a shutout win in an exhibition singles match.
On Thursday, Caribou blanked Madawaska, 5-0. Richards, Massey and Patton won singles matches, while Collins and Duplissie-Cyr took their first doubles match and Bouchard and Judd combined for the victory in second doubles.
At 6-2, Caribou is in fourth place in the Eastern Maine Class B standings behind Waterville, Ellsworth and Camden Hills.

Caribou freshman Ethan Plourde hits a backhand against Presque Isle’s Liam Hughes during last Tuesday’s match at CHS. The Vikings defeated the Wildcats, 3-2.

The Viking boys were able to defeat both PI and Madawaska as well and are now 8-0 and in third place in the region, with Waterville and Mount Desert Island claiming the top two spots.
Against the Wildcats, Caribou pulled off the 3-2 win thanks to victories in doubles by Brendan Cyr-Tyler Willey and Gabe Massey-Cameron Hill and in singles by Marquis.
Against the Owls two days later, Caribou scored an impressive 5-0 win as Ploude defeated Ian Lee, the top-ranked singles player in the region, in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5). Marquis and Gorence came through with easier victories in the other singles matches.
The Cyr-Willey and Massey-Hill duos also were victorious.
Austin Scott of Caribou won exhibition matches against both PI and Madawaska.
The Caribou teams have four matches remaining. They are at Fort Kent Thursday, host John Bapst in a doubleheader Friday and take on Houlton at home next Wednesday, May 22 to close out the regular season.
