 Caribou Library holding book sale

    CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Public Library will be sponsoring a book sale Friday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adult and children’s books, videos, DVDs, magazines, audio books and CDs will be available. Yard sale to benefit Limestone DI team

    CARIBOU — Can’t wait for next month’s City Wide Yard Sale?
Over 15 families are hosting a huge garage sale and a bake sale on Saturday, April 27 at the Caribou Learning Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the group needs all the support they can get to help Limestone’s three champion Destination ImagiNation teams make their way to Global Competition next month in Tennessee.
Limestone’s elementary, middle, and high school level teams each won State competition April 6, and now need to generate $21,000 by May 30 to help send the students to compete for the ultimate title of global champion.
This is the first of multiple fundraisers that will be held to help the teams reach their destination.
Anyone looking for a bargain, a baked goodie or are just looking to support the teams are encouraged to swing by the sale at the learning center.


Caribou Choral Society concerts May 4 & 5

    CARIBOU — The public is cordially invited to attend the Caribou Choral Society’s 37th annual spring concerts entitled Broadway Bound on Saturday, May 4, 7:30 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Church in Caribou, and Sunday, May 5, 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Presque Isle.
An all-Broadway show, the program will feature songs from 26 different musicals.


First regional veterans’ benefits workshop

    CARIBOU — Several service organizations are joining forces to hold a Veterans Benefits Workshop. The workshop will be held on Armed Forces Day — Saturday, May 18th — at the Chan Center of Cary Medical Center.
Representatives from the VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, Knights of Columbus, Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery, University of Maine, the Vet Center, DAV and others will be on hand to present information and answer questions. Representatives from Senator Collin’s and Congressman Michaud’s Office will be on hand as well.
The meeting will begin at noon and refreshments will be available. All veterans attending will be entered into a drawing for a “Veteran Appreciation Hunt” to be drawn in the fall. The winner will be awarded a three-day guided hunt for two for their season of choice.

Reed Fine Art Gallery presents ‘Revelations’ by Anderson Giles

    PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will present “Revelations” by UMPI Art Professor Anderson Giles from April 22 through June 8. A gallery reception is being held in conjunction with the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk, on Friday, May 3, from 5-7 p.m. A gallery talk with the artist will take place at 5:30 p.m.
A painter, photographer, gallery director and filmmaker, Giles has long created works that have been in over 100 solo and group exhibitions throughout New York, Chicago, Montreal, Albuquerque, Portland, Richmond and Norfolk. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Virginia Governor’s Trophy and a 1997 Telly Award.
“This exhibition honors Giles’s career at the university,” Reed Director Heather Sincavage stated. “His impact can be felt across campus but also stretches into the community and beyond. He is highly revered by his students and former students. So many look to Andy for his wisdom and insight.”
The Reed Fine Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays and university holidays.


Newell, composer and pianist, to perform

    PRESQUE ISLE — Live classical music returns to the University of Maine at Presque Isle with some contemporary twists when composer and pianist John Newell performs in the Campus Center on Wednesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free concert by the Lubec-based musician.
Newell’s performance, “American Landscapes,” will include the works of Samuel Barber, Charles Ives, George Gershwin, Philip Glass and a new work by UMFK faculty member and fellow composer Scott Brickman. Newell, who will also perform one of his own original works, said he chose this particular program to represent the wide range of musical styles in American music during the past 100 years.


‘Upcountry’ hosts launch party

    PRESQUE ISLE — The staff of the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s literary journal is celebrating the publication of its latest issue with an official “Upcountry” Reading and Launch Party at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in the Normal Hall faculty lounge.
This very special spring/summer 2013 “Town and Gown” issue includes written and visual works from both campus and community members, some of them returning contributors and others who are new writers to the journal’s pages. This issue had three student editors — Jessica Edney, Kayla Ames and Angel Cray. Two of them, Ames and Cray, will be on hand for the event along with journal adviser Dr. Melissa Crowe and several of the 19 contributors in this issue.
Contributors will read from their work, paper copies of the issue will be available, and refreshments will be provided. The reading and launch party is free and open to the public.
