CARIBOU — This evening at 7 p.m. the Caribou Middle School Concert Band will be joining with the Caribou High School Symphonic Band at the Caribou Performing Arts Center to present a concert featuring the works of Maine composer Terry White.
The program will include the world premiere performance of “Escape,” a concert work commissioned by the Caribou Middle School Band.
In the fall of 2012, Caribou’s conductor Vaughn McLaughlin commissioned the first ever concert band work written specifically for Caribou’s performing groups. In the process of composing the piece, White shared his early version of the work with the conductor and his students. Students made suggestions to the composer and many of the ideas were used in the completion of the final version.
White is a published composer on a national scale and his pieces depict the beauty of Maine’s diverse landscape. Also included on the concert program with “Escape” will be “From Mountain to Sea,” “Downeast Adventure” and “Journey.”
“Escape” has been picked up by one of the nation’s largest publishers of concert band literature. After this evening’s performance, the piece will be available for purchase worldwide. At the top of every piece will read “Commissioned by the Caribou Middle School Band, conductor Vaughn J. McLaughlin.”
White will be in residence for the performance and two days of workshops with middle and high school instrumental music students in Caribou to discuss his works and the compositional process.
