WOODLAND — There were wockets in pockets, sneetches on beaches and even a Grinch that stole Christmas at the Woodland School on March 1; students, staff and faculty of the Woodland Consolidated School celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Day a day early this year, as both events occurred on a Saturday, March 2, this year.

All of the grades decorated their doors with Dr. Seuss-inspired themes, from the Lorax to Horton Hears a Who; Teaching Principal Susie Schloeman even dressed up like the Cat in the Hat, popping into classrooms at different points of the day to read Dr. Seuss stories to students from kindergarten to eighth grade.
“It’s funny, you’re never too old for Dr. Seuss,” explained Woodland’s Librarian Cindy Privette, who traditionally organizes the event but was unable to attend this year; Privette normally dresses up as the Cat in the Hat, and even recited examples of how the Cat tries to speak in rhyme all day.
“We really have a lot of fun — we have great staff here and they get really excited for the celebration,” she explained.
Students were each given a bookmark in conjunction with the day to promote reading, and youths celebrated the very silly, Seuss-styled day by wearing stripes and all sorts of crazy clothing that one might expect to see in Whoville. School staff even served up a big birthday cake for Dr. Seuss, the popular author otherwise known as Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Playing a Dr. Seuss inspired game together on March 1 were Woodland students Carson Doody, grade 8, and Juliet Littleton, grade 3.

As part of the March 1 Dr. Seuss/Read Across America Day, older students of the Woodland School took time to read and play with younger students; shown here are eighth-grader Jacob Driscoll spending time with third-grader Dominick Crouch.

While woodland may be far from the beaches, sixth-graders decorated their door with the two types of Sneetches — star bellied and plain bellied — in honor of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and Read Across America Day. Showcasing their artistic endeavors were, from left, sixth-graders of Mrs. Swan’s class Julia Dahlgren, Monica McLaughlin and McKenzie Rossignol.

The Grinch may have stole Christmas, but Woodland students were pretty happy about their Seuss-inspired door. Showcasing the third-graders artwork were, from left, eighth-grader Megan Thornton, third-graders Gabrielle Sutherland and Cassidy Page, and eighth-grader Simone Michaud.
