Woodland eighth-grade ladies participated in the annual Speaking Contest on Jan. 31 that determines the King and Queen of Winter Carnival. Participating in the speaking contest were, from left, Megan Thornton, daughter of John and Karyn Thornton; Simoné Michaud, daughter of Rick and Katie Michaud; Dianna Poulin, daughter of Karen and David Poulin; Kristen Sarmiento, daughter of Stan and Bonnie Sarmiento and Meghan Cole, daughter of Matt and JoAnna Cole. Thornton recited “Camping,” by Don McDonald with a few of her own adaptations, and was coached by Debbie McPherson. Coached by Jen Holmes, Michaud recited “Country Girl,” a piece that she wrote herself. Poulin was coached by her mother and recited “Bunnies,” by Dianna Poulin. Kristen Saramiento recited the piece “And They Say Being Superman is Bad” by Mariesa Saramiento and was coached by Debbie Sutherland. Cole recited “Life Lessons” and was coached by Amanda Dean. The Queen of Winter Carnival will be crowned on Saturday, March 2 during the re-scheduled Winter Carnival. The event was cancelled at the beginning of the month due to a lack of snow. As no males participated in the annual Speaking Contest, there will only be a Queen crowned.
