1938: A wild buffalo brought to Caribou for sportsmans show

115 Years Ago- Feb. 10, 1897

• On Saturday, 2,500 railroad ties were purchased in town; price paid was sixteen cents per tie.
• Samuel Palmer of Limestone passed through Caribou Monday on his way to the Klondike. Mr. Palmer went by the B. & A. to Greenville, where he took the C. P. R. to Seattle.

100 Years Ago-Feb. 6, 1913

• Too early for spring — It was on Sunday, Candlemas Day, (Feb. 2) the first straw hat of the season was observed being worn in Caribou. When asked if he was not rushing the season a trifle the wearer replied he had always been accused of being “hot-headed” and was going to see if he could not be “cool headed” for a while.
• Banking rivalry — The Aroostook Trust and Banking Co. of Caribou, Maine and Caribou National Bank, each placing prominent ads on facing pages of The Aroostook Republican, offer 4 percent interest paid on deposits in their savings departments.

75 Years Ago-Feb. 10, 1938

• Local sportsmen buffaloed — A crate containing a real live buffalo arrived in Caribou Monday morning for the Aroostook Sportsmen’s Show. “Old Dan Jr.,” as he has been christened, is two years old, weighs 1,100 pounds and is as wild as only a wild animal can be. On arrival it was evident he could not be led through the streets to Fred Forbes’ barn, thus he was transported thereto crate and all and has since been thriving on a diet of potatoes, hay and water.
• For medicinal use — The W. C. T. U. (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) met at the home of Mrs. Ethel Lewis on Thursday last with dinner served to 20 members including the committee, Mrs. Ewer, Mrs. Cora Todd and Mrs. Blanche Monteith. The program topic was “Medical Temperance.” Mrs. Edith Thomas announced a play, written to emphasize the fact that modern medical men do not prescribe alcohol in so many cases as was formerly done.

50 Years Ago-Feb. 7, 1963

• Miss USO selected — On Friday evening, “Miss USO” for the state of Maine was selected from the following candidates: Letha Hedstrom, Stephany Dubay, Candy Lockhart, Hope Getchell, Sue Phelan, Patty Wooten, Judy Tate, Jean Martin and Jackie Saucier. Miss Saucier, who resides in Caribou and hails from Connecticut, shall reign as Queen for the year.
• Annual auto show — The prime exhibits will be new cars, but the Caribou Kiwanis Club’s annual auto show will also feature extra attractions, from snowmobiles to closed circuit television, and a full scale model of the Project Mercury space capsule brought all the way from San Francisco for the show.

25 Years Ago-Feb. 10, 1988

• Echoes introduced — A new magazine designed to promote the lifestyles and personalities of Aroostook County people hit the newsstands Feb. 4, and according to Gordon Hammond of NOAH advertising, the outlook is positive. “The expectation is that Echoes will be to Aroostook County what DownEast has been to the Maine coast,” he said.
• Caribou’s cabin-fever cure — From skiing to skating to cribbage to beano to racing portable outhouses, there’s just about anything anyone would want on an 11-day winter fun spree in the Crown of Maine. It’s all happening in Caribou starting tomorrow at the Caribou Winter Carnival. This year’s theme is “Let it Snow!”
