CARIBOU and ELLSWORTH – Paul Dyer, 88, died January 19, 2013 at Machias. He was born in Caribou November 23, 1924 the son of the late Harry H. and Eva (Paul) Dyer.
Paul was a 1943 graduate of Caribou High School and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II where he was trained as a pilot and a turret gunner onboard a B-29. Fortunately, two weeks before he was to be sent to the Pacific, the war ended. He owned and operated Dyer’s Body Shop in Caribou for many years, eventually settling on the coast in Hancock. He worked until retirement at Ashmore Brothers Garage in Ellsworth doing wheel alignment. The last five years, Mr. Dyer was a resident of the Maine Veterans’ Home in Machias. Paul was an avid Ham Radio operator (NW1P) and made many friends through this hobby. He had several passions he pursued with vigor. He kept his flying license for many years and enjoyed renting planes and taking family and friends on short flights. He was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader, enjoyed metal detecting, playing his classical guitar, woodworking, as well as repairing clocks and was a Charter Member of the Jaycees and member of Sportsmen’s Inc.
Paul is survived by his five children, Philip Dyer and his wife, Mary, of Clarkesville, Georgia, John P. Dyer of Belgrade, Diane Richardson and her husband, Tom, of Clarkesville, Georgia, James M. Dyer of Machias, and Luke Dyer of Van Buren; five siblings, Arlene Milton of Bangor, Wanda Toohey and her husband, Bob, of Tucson, Arizona, Cora Havlir of Dallas, Texas, Betty Richards of El Paso, Texas, and George Dyer and his wife, Henrietta, of Tucson, Arizona. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Friends called at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou from 11 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013 until time of funeral services which were held at 1 p.m. from the funeral home with Rev. George McLaughlin, officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
