100 Years Ago-Dec. 26, 1912

Christmas 1912 — The rural mail carriers made their usual rounds Christmas Day, the only holiday in the year when Uncle Sam insists that the thousands of carriers in his service shall not rest from their labors. Christmas concerts were held at the Episcopal church Monday night, Free Baptist and Methodist churches Tuesday night, Baptist church Wednesday night; the Universalist Sunday School concert will be held on Friday night.

Washburn news — Thomas F. Phair Jr. of Presque Isle was in town last Wednesday making preparations to open up a grocery store. He will remodel his father’s store somewhat and occupy that for a while.

75 Years Ago-Dec. 30, 1937

Carnival queen contestants — The Carnival Queen contest of the Fort Fairfield Winter Carnival with Aroostook and New Brunswick contestants is creating high interest with the passing of each week. Among the leading contestants are Elizabeth Lowrey, Roma Bell, Helen Fisher and Vera Coombs of Fort Fairfield, Laura Wright of Perth, N. B., Helena Davenport of Limestone and Rowena Barnes of Easton.

Dollar Days, dollar shoes — “Dollar Days” mean “Dollar Shoes.” Friday of this week and every day next week are “Dollar Days” at the Shoe Outlet in Caribou, celebrating the New Year by offering every woman an opportunity to purchase a new pair of shoes for “One Dollar.”

50 Years Ago-Dec. 27, 1962

Van Buren holiday visits — Miss Rita Villeneuve of Moose Creek, Ont., was a guest of her aunt and cousins, Mrs. Anne Daigle and family. She also visited Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gagnon and family, Mrs. Elizabeth Baker and Mrs. Margaret Carbonneau and family.

Musicals at the movies — The Powers Theatre in Caribou is showing “Oklahoma” with Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, and “West Side Story” featuring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer.

25 Years Ago-Dec. 30, 1987

Insurance deadline approaches — If you are one of the 150,000 uninsured motorists in the state, be warned. This Friday, Jan. 1, a new state law requiring motor vehicle insurance coverage takes effect.

Grand opening for the arts — The Caribou Performing Arts Center officially opens Sunday and people from throughout Aroostook County and New Brunswick, Canada are expected to attend either the 3 p.m. matinee or the formal dedication ceremony and performance at 7 p.m. David Haskell, former Caribou High School English and drama teacher has been appointed director of the center.
