Washburn girls undefeated after 2 easy wins
The Limestone-MSSM Eagles were able to register their first win of the season Thursday as they topped Madawaska, 59-47, in a game played at Limestone.
The Eagles had dropped their first four contests, but bounced back behind five players who scored at least nine points.
Nate Tucker led the charge with 16 points. Chris Bernier added 14, while Brandon Thompson and Tristan Kirk netted 10 apiece. Bret Butler tallied another nine.
Ian Lee hit for 16 points to pace Madawaska.
Last Tuesday, the Eagles had fallen at Van Buren, 60-54, despite 28 points from Tucker.
Marc Lajoie had 26 points and Caleb Roy 23 to give the Crusaders their first win of the campaign.
In other Class D action last week, Fort Fairfield needed overtime, but was able to get past the Katahdin Cougars in a boys’ game Thursday, 56-49.
Andrew Lewis hit a shot with 18 seconds left for FF to send the game into overtime. He ended up with 26 points, while Andrew Tuck netted 11 more for the 4-2 Tigers.
Colton Bivighouse scored 20 for the Cougars.
The only other boys’ game played through Thursday saw Washburn race past Wisdom Thursday, 77-27.
The Washburn girls proved too much for Easton in a home game played last Tuesday. The Beavers’ Mackenzie Worcester had 22 points to go along with six assists and five steals in a 67-24 triumph.
Carsyn Koch had 14 points and Grace Braley 10 off the bench for the winners, who also defeated Wisdom Thursday, 68-22, and are now 5-0 on the campaign.
Cassandra Buck tossed in nine points as Easton’s leading scorer.
The Caribou boys had their scheduled game at Fort Kent last Wednesday postponed due to the snowstorm. It will now be played Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
The Viking girls and boys were scheduled to play at Old Town Saturday.
The teams have a busy week coming up with home games against Ellsworth Thursday, Mount Desert Island Friday and Foxcroft Academy Monday. These mark the first home contests of the season for the Caribou squads.
The Limestone-MSSM girls will go back to work after a long layoff. The 2-2 Eagles, which had last Wednesday’s scheduled home game against Fort Fairfield postponed until Jan. 17, take on Van Buren at home this afternoon at 1 p.m. The team then plays at Wisdom Friday, also at 1 p.m.
