The Caribou boys’ basketball team faced a tough challenge Saturday when it made the trip to East Machias to take on Washington Academy, but the Vikes had a strong showing in a 74-61 victory.
Caribou is now 2-0 heading into tonight’s scheduled game at Fort Kent. The team will then play its fourth consecutive road game to begin the season when it travels to Old Town Saturday to take on the Coyotes.
Coach Chris Casavant was pleased with his team’s performance against the Raiders, which had knocked off Big East Conference favorite Mount Desert Island the previous weekend.
“I thought we did a nice job,” Casavant said. “[WA] is different than any team we play because they use a 2-2-1 halfcourt trapping zone 90 percent of the time, but we prepared for it in practice all week and we did a good job attacking it Saturday.”
Caribou got the hosts in early foul trouble and ended up shooting 49 free throws in the game. One of the Vikes’ early-season weaknesses was exposed as the team hit just 29 of its foul shots (59 percent).
“We’re not great in that area right now,” Casavant said.
Four Caribou players were in double figures in scoring. Dayne Savage had 20 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Cody Herbert added 18 points, Derek Richardson 13 and Matt Milliard 10.
Kameron Manter and Herbert led the Vikes with seven rebounds each. Manter and Milliard led Caribou in the assist department with three each.
Jacob Schoppee totalled 20 points to lead Washington Academy.
