CARIBOU — The city of Caribou lost a longstanding business owner, Roland St. Peter, on Dec. 14. He was 76.
St. Peter was the owner and operator of Roland’s Gulf service station, located first on Sweden St., then later on Hershel St., in Caribou for close to 40 years.
In more recent years, and up until his death, St. Peter was a co-owner of the County Quick Stop gas station and convenience store located on Route 1 in Caribou. He owned the business with his son Craig and businessman Joe Sobol of New Hampshire.
“The St. Peter family is like my family,” Sobol said. “Roland was like a father to me. As a business partner, he taught me many things. He was a tremendous human being.”
Caribou Area Chamber of Commerce Director William Tasker recalled St. Peter and his service station on Hershel St. when Tasker worked for ATX, which was located across the street from Roland’s.
“He was a good egg,” Tasker commented. “He was great to our employees and was always willing to work with them to give them a good deal on car repair.”
St. Peter was also a member of the United States Air Force, Henry B. Pratt Post No.15 American Legion, Fred V. Brescia Council No. 1870 Knights of Columbus and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was an outdoor enthusiast and vehicle aficionado.
