American Flag ColorAR James Chartier OBCARIBOU – James J. Chartier passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2012, in Pennsylvania. He was born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, on August 31, 1957, son of the late Real and Lorraine Chartier.

He grew up in Madawaska and after graduation, he served six years in the U.S. Navy in Spain and Portugal. After his military service, he continued on in law enforcement and graduated from the Maine Police Academy, serving on the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department, and the Van Buren, Limestone, Caribou and Fort Fairfield Police Departments. James also served as an EMT and with the Caribou Fire Department. Following his career of public service, he began long haul truck driving for many years, most recently being employed by R.F. Chamberland in St. Agatha.

James is survived by his four sons, Matthew Chartier and his wife, Debbie and daughter, Elsie of Biddeford, Adam, Daniel and Kameron Chartier all of Caribou; his sisters, Charlene Pike and husband, Scott of Mapleton, and their daughter, Jasmine Pike of Bangor, and son, Zachary Pike of Boulder, Colorado, Felice Chartier and partner, William Stephenson of Fredericton, N.B.; special uncle, Marcel Chartier of St. Agatha; step-mother, Irma Mavor Chartier of Quebec and her children, Louis Mavor, Jr., of Sunnyvale, Calif, Debbie Marquis of Millinocket, Darlene Mavor of Madawaska, and Dacia Charette of Virginia.

James always had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons as he did with his father. He loved cooking his wild game in a French traditional meal “pot en pot”, for his family and friends every Christmas. His sense of creativity could be found in his many wood working pieces and furniture which he shared with his family. James’s greatest joy was family gatherings where he would incessantly tease his sisters, and make everyone laugh with his stories. He will be greatly missed and will live in our hearts forever.

Visiting hours were at 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 6, followed by a military service at 11 a.m. at the Lancaster & Morgan Funeral Home, Clover St., Caribou.
